Barbie Goes Global

Oh dear God.

Mrs. Hockey Mom, who has been clucking like a chicken about being the head of Alaska's national guard as part of her foreign policy experience, and who got herself a passport last year (!!!), is out on a U.N. field trip.

Wheeee.

Of all the reasons I listed to myself regarding why I believe McCain should not be president, until he chose "Barbie" Palin as his running mate, I never thought one of them would be short-sightedness. Even to the women who were pleased to see a girl on one of the teams, and the men who ogled at her, it has always been obvious that even McCain does not envision VP or even President Palin. It's all about winning. Nothing more, nothing less.

But really, didn't McCain have any better choices? Condie, for one, would have been tremendously intimidating. Kay Bailey Hutchison would have been unbeatable. And yet, McCain wanted -at a highly manipulative subconscious level, as my husband points out - to slap Obama in the face with someone as youthful, and a woman at that. It would have worked, if "age" and "gender" were the only things people were checking off in their list of presidential qualifications. No matter how energizing her presence may be to the McCain campaign, that is precisely where it ends.

Palin is no national leader.

Gulping through today's interviews with world leaders, poor Sarah looked, if possible, more inexperienced than ever in this awkward exercise. The McCain campaign would have done her more good by sending her on a little tour of Europe, but the fierceness with which they are guarding her would have been compromised.

When the kitchen gloves come off in 42 days, Sarah's hands are going to show some evidence of having used foreign soap.

As I said, wheeeeee.

P.S. Just my long overdue quarter cent, processed in vented steam. For the latest in news, opinion and analysis, you'd be better off following Animesh's blog.
